Dope Sh!t: Idle Warship

Being a huge fan of both Res and Talib Kweli, I was excited to hear that they were collaborating on a new sonic project. This isn't the first time the duo has hooked up to work on a musical level. Back in 02' they had a track together on the Beautiful Struggle and earlier this year the duo released a few tracks. I don't know much about the band as of yet, but from some of their tracks that I was able to peep, its pure FIYAH! Only those of eclectic minds would find them the bit of interest. Also of note is their recent addition of Graph Nobel! Who is Idle Warship? Well I'll let them explain that to you...here is their Mantra:

Idle Warship started as an idea to make a dance song for fun. It has since morphed into a full blown labor of love, with it's own identity. We no longer control it.

Idle Warship is a vehicle of expression, it is a state of mind that creates art that is needed. It is not needed for the world, it is needed for the artist. It is selfish. It is egotistical. It is confused. It is human.

Pop stars, movie stars, celebuglies, this is what we worship. They are beyond royalty, we try to assign a divine quality to them. We prop them up and make sacrifices to them. There are always new deities screaming for our attention, and we dispose of our gods in grand fashion. We tear them to shreds and fight over the scraps like rats on a sinking ship. The Lauryn Hills, Britney Spears and Anna Nicoles of the world were once little girls with dreams. They seem crazy, but I say they are sane reactions to a crazy world.

An Idle Warship sits at the port, waiting for a war that will never be fought. This is who we’ve become, so empty that we do not participate in activity we are designed for. We are Idle Warships at bay, afraid of the fight on the open seas. This music is the soundtrack for our lives. It is voyeuristic, and it takes you on a journey thru flesh and blood, but the divine is on the other side. We had to come to your world to get you and bring you back to ours.

You already, know I have to let you hear a sample of of greatness soon to be resounding in your ears to come!

N*E*R*D Sooner or Later

A video from my favourite crew N.E.R.D! This video is topical with what is happening with the global economy and its pure stroke of genius due to the concept and timing. Sooner or Later is off Seeing Sounds their third effort. I loved the ZUNE ad placement cracked me up, but they shortened the best part of the song which was the ill guitar solo near the end of this brilliant video.

B-B-Bussssst A Move!!! Pt. 2

Now I hear that "Pete the Pop Lockin Playa" and his friend “Hustlin Hank” (yes, thats what they call themselves) were trying to get their hands on the German chick. Tonight! God does my life suck! She’s a sweet girl and very impressionable. Now these dancer kids who run the school are probably gonna foul her before I get my shot.

My shoulders are killing me.

This kid DJ Tanner is gonna be on the wheels of steel for the competition. I’m cool with him and he wished me luck when I saw him today. He said he’s been saving some of his dopes beats and freshest grooves especially for tomorrow. I wanna be ready for whatever he puts on. I can feel the funk in the blood. If dancing was a house, Poppin’ Pete would be evicted!

So I get to school this morning all braided up and there’s a huge buzz about the contest tonight. People I don’t even know heard about my story started wishing me luck in the hallway. I’m in the library during my 3rd period study hall and one of Poppin Pete’s henchmen “Funky Brewster” (again, I’m sorry, all the kids in my school are total douches and refuse to go by their real name) comes over and starts talking to me.

He says that Pete The Pop Lockin’ Playa heard about all the junk I’ve been talking and wants to challenge me to a dance fight after school, before the Harlem Shake Contest. I’m like I told him I had to practice my routine for tonight and I was totally against unsanctioned dance contests.

So now it’s lunch time and I see Poppin’ Pete and Hustlin’ Hank making a bee line right for my table. I’m sitting there with Anna enjoying my kiwi strawberry Capri Sun and Pete is like “You better get down (dance) or lay down (die). 3PM, out by the dumpsters in the parking lot. ”

I couldn’t back down in front of Anna so I was like “Sorry to knock your Hustle, Hank, but it looks like your boy Pete is gonna get Popped!” In my head I was like, what the hell am I getting myself into. Word spread around school quick.

Now it’s almost 3PM, I can’t find Anna and there’s no way to get out of this. I make my way toward the dumpsters and I see this huge crowd. It’s Poppin’ Pete and the rest of his goonies — “Hustlin’ Hank”, “Funky Brewster”, “Willie Wiggles,” and “Newman Beatbox.”

I see Poppin’ Pete and he’s got his hands around Anna teaching her to do the Thunder Clap. I’m heated.

As soon as she saw me she ran over and said I didn’t have to do this. Someone could get seriously hurt or even expelled and to save all my energy for tonight’s contest. I just said, “I danced my way into this mess and now I’m gonna dance my way out” and tossed my Jansport to the side…

Nobody had a radio so “Newman Beatbox” said he would lay down a stone cold groove. He sets it off with a little “BOOM, BAP, BOOM BOOM BOOM, BAP!”

Pete starts Harlem Shaking. He starts with a couple rare combo’s I’ve never seen and he says: “SHA SHA, SHAKE, SHA SHAKE SHAKE… SHAKE SOMETHIN’!”

His whole crew was like “OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!”

My face goes sour. It’s my turn to rock. I thought I would start it off safe with a little lean back, lean back… and then slip into the Rockaway. All of a sudden I freeze up, catch a cramp in my leg and hit the floor. I didn’t know what the hell was happening. Even more “OOOOOHHHH!!s” now.

All of a sudden, his whole crew takes advantage and jumps me! There was this huge cloud of dust and I was at the bottom in the fetal position. Like six guys just Harlem Shaking on top of me (pause?). I think one of them was doing the Running Man too because I felt some feet near my groin. Anna ran and got help, so the assistant principal ended up coming out so everybody started running. I finally got up but the damage was already done.

I’m battered, bruised and only a few hours from the Harlem Shake contest. They just wanted to take me out so they can have tonight’s prize money all to themselves.

God I hate typing… more on the actual contest in a bit.

Kissey So Swede

Posted by Arz Nova On 04:03 0 comments
Earlier this week, I recently came across Swedish musician Kissey Asplund, who hails from Stockholm,Sweden. I think she took a hairstyle cue from Janelle Monae. [I love Ms. Monae :)] Besides the point, surely crossing paths with Ms. Asplund proved to be to a blessing to my ears and eyes.

I had purchased her solo album Plethora, her first solo album that I come to love. Now, when I'm fond of something I surely can absolutely not keep it a secret. So anywhere, at any given moment either with friends or relatives or complete strangers, I preach to them about Kissey Asplund's musical wonderland that is Plethora.

Just when I had baptised everyone in my vicinity, I stumbled on yet another gem from Ms. Asplund. I kid you not, I felt so many emotions at the same time. I have never felt so confused in my life. Well except that time when I was trying to figure out what it was women REALLY meant to say. Anyway, back to lovely Kissey. Nike selected 8 individual artists to compose songs to honour the popular design of the AM90 (a Nike brand shoe).

On the stunning and impressive
Silverlake, its an experimental wonder. Its sound has influences of electronica, jazz, house and soul. Its a pleasure upon first listen as you're drawn in by the instrumentation and the svelte but intimate voice of Kissey. Watch out her voice is rather captivating.

On the track
Snowfall, its another gem to the ears, though its sombre its quite soothing, all again thanks in part to Kissey's deliverance and soul invoking voice. I truly enjoy listening to her and I know you shall as well.

This new sound is in a category of itself with the likes of J*Davey forging a new and refreshing breath to the stale state of music today. Both tracks are must haves whether or not you're a fan of Ms. Asplund. Hit the download links to cop!

Oh yes please go and buy Plethora!

B-B-Bussssst A Move!!!

Posted by Arz Nova On 23:35 0 comments

This story is not written by myself but by the talent of GuevaraGhost - "The Harlem Shake Story."

This is one of the funniest stories I have ever read so far in my life, originally written in three parts here is the fist stage enjoy!

Long Story Short But Please Bear With Me...

I need MAJOR help

My parents went away last week for their 20th wedding anniversary and left me home alone. So I’ve been talking to the German exchange chick in my Bio class for most of the semester and this week was perfect to make my move since I got an empty house. I told her I was gonna show her a “piece of Germany”.

So yesterday, I grabbed the keys to my mom’s Benz wagon, had some stoner dude pick me up a 6 pack of Becks, and I thought we could finish the night off with a sausage tasting.

Long story short, we’re in the car, the Becks is kicking in with her (I didn’t drink and drive) and she says it’s cool to go back to my pad. In the back of my head i start flipping out. Then when I go to make a U-turn I forget that I have it in freaking reverse. I backed up into a telephone pole!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Nooooooo!! Cockblocked by a pole, pole blocked! I got a MEAN dent it the back and I’m flipping out and it kills the mood. I was in a get in those ribs mood and she was in a take me home mood.

So I take it over to this oily mechanic dude I know to get an estimate today. He tells me $950 BUCKS!! I’m like Allah, Jesus, whoever, please just kill me. So ‘ go to my boys house and everybody thinks its FUNNY! This girl Casey was there who is like the head of all the dances and all that says she might have an idea to help me out.

She said that our school dance team was sponsoring a Harlem Shake contest on Monday and the GRAND PRIZE IS $1000! At first I was like “Yessssssss!” But then I remembered I didn’t know how to Harlem Shake.

I’m determined to get this done. Whatever it takes. But the competition is supposed to be steep. Like 100 kids signed up and they’re busing in actual Harlem residents to judge the contest. I need some soul quick! If i win I can get the car fixed and cleaned up before the parental units get home next Thursday.

Any tips? Anything? Videos? I just spent an hour watching this girls copy of Darren’s Dance Grooves and my head is spinning. I’m practicing in the mirror but it just looks like I’m drowning. My arms are just flapping all over the place and I almost dislocated my shoulder. I’m broke. My parents left me money to eat and stuff but that’s just about to run out. I spent most of it on a couple pairs of Dunks the day they left. Now all I can afford is like a slice of pizza a day.

To Be Continued...
